Mr. Philip S. K. Leung, B.Sc., M.Sc., MBA
INSEAD X 2
Founder, Small Talks Circles Education Foundation
Founder, Fountain Of Knowledge
Founder & CEO, HelloJack! Limited
Mr. Leung, affectionately known as ‘Phil’ among university students, is the founder of Small Talks Circles. Owing to a troubled childhood and young adulthood Phil has developed a genuine penchant to work with young people. WWII decimated family wealth causing much distress among the Leung clans, who had to run for covers to make ends meet… At a tender age ‘street kid Phil’ endured 12 harshest possible years life could have presented… Fast forward three decades…during a casual meeting in 1988 with then ShanghaiMayor/Party Chief the Hon. Mr. Zhu Rongji, the seeds of a non-mainstream, social education forum had been sown… …Hong Kong parents/students are fixated on formal education at the expense of ‘other
things’ in life. A typical scenario is that, after having been in the workforce for years and even decades, graduates would get stuck in some mediocre positions not being able to see the light of day… Small Talks Circles attempts to add a new sight line to student life so much so that young men and women could find new skill sets and therefore a rewarding/fulfilling work life. ‘Putting money where his mouth is’ so to speak, Phil founded ‘HelloJack! Limited in 2019 with an all-STC team – investor, featured speakers, alumni and current students. HelloJack! is a Home Improvement business powered by technology. The startup is said to be doing very well after only two years ! Phil studied Humanities at Kingsway College in Oshawa, Ontario; obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc at the University of Manitoba; MBA from the Chinese University of Hong Kong; has had two tours of the INSEAD Senior Management Program in Hong Kong and Fontainebleau, France.
Phil spearheaded Dairy Farm International’s first manufacturing joint venture in 1980 in Guangzhou and was appointed General Manager before he was poached to the Seagram Company in 1986 to lead the global giant’s investment in China, and was named Managing Director, Seagram China. He left a cushy corporate life twenty years later to venture
into angel-type investments with projects in China, Vancouver and Toronto. Phil is a selfconfessed classical music and art buff, his favorite subjects at dinner parties would be interior architecture, art, sports, or the great Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff… Phil’s pastime also includes scouting period furniture pieces of different origins. He played first and second violin at several orchestras while at high school and university – Hong Kong Youth Orchestra;
Oshawa Symphony; Winnipeg Youth Orchestra; and the University of Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. At 19, he won first prize, Open Division, at the Peterborough Kiwanis Music Festival in Ontario playing Czardas by V. Monti. Phil picked up tennis late in his life and is known among the tennis circle as a tourney junkie!

Dr. Yichen (Serena) Dai
2016 Rhodes Scholar; Research Scientist
Dr. Yichen (Serena) Dai, a STC alumna, majored in Molecular Biotechnology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Most of her undergraduate work focused on plant domestication and gene evolution, making use of comparative analysis methods to understand how domesticated soybean lost its resistance to drought and high salt conditions compared to its wild relatives, the multiple wild soybean species commonly found in northern China. Apart from research in the lab, Serena valued her time in Hong Kong and took every opportunity to learn more about Hong Kong society. She led university events gathering local and non-local students together, participated in volunteer work with asylum seekers in Hong Kong, and organized events for underprivileged primary school children in the Northern Territories. Serena was awarded the Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship for her academic achievements and participation in extracurricular events. Serena was elected as the 2016 Hong Kong Rhodes Scholar, and after graduating from the Chinese University of Hong Kong with First Class Honors, she went on to pursue a DPhil in Zoology at the University of Oxford. Her DPhil work focused on gene evolution in a desert rodent, the fat sand rat, a common rodent found in desert areas around the Middle East and North Africa and also used as an animal model to study diet-induced diabetes in a laboratory setting. She made use of genome sequencing results which uncovered that the sand rat possessed lots of “weird” genes with changes not found in any other vertebrate animal, and focused on finding out what these “weird” genes and their unusual protein products do. Serena’s research uncovered a previously overlooked relationship between the DNA molecule, gene function, and diabetes. Aside from lab-based research, Serena enjoyed the many opportunities in and around Oxford to meet researchers around the world and scientists that worked on other exciting topics. She was awarded the Verne Chapman Young Scientist award by the International Mammalian Genome Society in 2019, and she was also amongst the eight DPhil students selected by the Society of Molecular Biology and Evolution to present her work at the Walter Fitch Symposium. As a Rhodes Scholar, Serena greatly enjoyed her time at Rhodes House. She was eager to start the tradition of organizing Spring Festival dinners open to all Scholars there, and very much valued the opportunity to chat with Scholars from all over the world. Serena became a Scholar Facilitator in her final year at Oxford, a role aiming to help the administrative and Scholar affairs team at Rhodes House better understand the needs of Scholars, and to help plan and design events at Rhodes House. After graduating from Oxford, Serena joined the Institute of Zoology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences as a postdoctoral researcher. She is currently working on evolution of the insulin/insulin-like peptide pathway in vertebrate animals. Having benefited greatly from learning to communicate and reaching out to other students from various backgrounds during her time as an undergraduate, Serena is keen to help STC grow and she hopes that more students will be able to benefit from STC events.
Mr. Kevin Wayne Hart
Teacher, Globetrotter, Sinologist
A Canadian of Finnish heritage, Kevin grew up in a multicultural and multilingual environment, with members of the indigenous, Finnish, Italian, Ukrainian, French and British communities all contributing to the rich cultural and linguistic mix that defines his hometown of Sudbury, Ontario. As a student of Modern Languages at the University of Ottawa, Canada, Kevin’s first taste of life abroad came as an exchange student at the University of Foreign Students at Perugia, Italy, after his second year. That summer opened his eyes to new life and new civilizations, and wetted his appetite for the umpteen travels that were to follow. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree, Kevin was intent on seeing more of the world, and even worked as a banquet caterer at his own graduation in order the save up money to fund his travels. His first few years abroad were spent exploring and doing odd jobs in Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and North Africa. In the fall of 1987, he found a job teaching English in Japan, his first exposure to Asian culture. He took an immediate liking to sushi, sumo wrestling, hot springs and the cram school he worked at, and in his time off, explored the country from top to bottom, picking up quite passable Japanese along the way. After 4 years of teaching, he was ready for a new challenge, and his attention shifted as he intended to study full-time once again in a language program. Intuiting that the Chinese language would play an extremely important role in the future world order, he set his sights on nearby Taiwan. Having enrolled at Feng Chia University in Taichung, the immersive language environment and intense course load suited him to a tee. After 2 years of full-time study, he became conversant in Mandarin and gained an impressive grasp of both traditional and simplified Chinese characters. To support his scholastic pursuits and further fund his adventures, he worked as an English-language editor and sporting-goods model. He also received a scholarship from the government for his studies at Feng Chia. Currently residing in Barcelona, Spain, Kevin works with the Chinese immigrant community as a consultant, helping newcomers bridge the language barriers and smooth their transition into local society. Semi-retired life suits Kevin well, as he now enjoys more time to engage in personal pursuits such as promoting his wife’s music, improving his Spanish, running the many mountain trails surrounding Barcelona, swimming in the Mediterranean, playing in a men’s basketball league, and sightseeing all over the European continent.
